During September, I'll be walking in the Guiding Eyes for the Blind Wagathon. This is a cumulative marathon where participants walk 26.2 miles before September 30th.
Since 1999, my family and I have been volunteer puppy raisers, raising a total of 21 puppies for this amazing cause. I'm currently raising a yellow Lab named Phoenix! Being a puppy raiser requires patience, consistency, and love. It's a 15-month volunteer commitment where an 8-week-old puppy comes into my care, and I have the opportunity to lay the foundation for it to become a guide dog.
I'm often asked, "How do you give up the puppy?" I always explain that of course I get attached and shed tears when it's time for our paths to part. However, I also feel a sense of pride and accomplishment that I had the opportunity to do something meaningful for another person. Another person's dreams are about to come true, and this puppy will continue to be loved beyond measure. The more I give, the more joy I receive.
Each guide dog is worth approximately $50,000. Every month, approximately 8 guide dogs graduate, COMPLETELY free of charge to the guide dog user. Please consider making a donation of any size to support our mission. Thank you for your consideration!
