I was born legally blind, with partial vision in both eyes due to a rare condition called Peter's Anomaly. Things worsened significantly when I rapidly started losing my vision in my right eye at the age of sixteen. Although doctors did everything they could to save what little vision I had, the surgeries were unsuccessful and in 2011 my right eye was removed.
This led to a very challenging adjustment period in my life. I found myself increasing reliant on mobility aids to navigate safely, such my white cane and also the assistance of other people for transportation, errands ect. But these tools didn't provide the level of independence that I had hoped for. Consequently I didn't feel motivated to go out and do things. I would just do what had to get done.

I had heard how helpful a Guide dog could be but I was unsure about how to go about it. Then I found this wonderful organization, Guiding Eyes for the Blind. They transforms the lives of those who are blind or visually impaired by providing guide dogs free of charge. Together, these dogs are paired with just the right student - and both their lives are forever changed. I received my second guide dog Yani about two years ago. She has helped so much in every aspect of my life. Before getting Yani I used to be afraid of crossing streets by myself for fear of getting hurt by oncoming traffic such as electric cars that are not easily detected. Guide dogs are trained in intelligent disobedience, which means deliberately disobeying a command to keep us safe. This has been an extremely valuable skill and on a few occasions has literally saved my life. I have my confidence and freedom back and that is something that I am extremely thankful for. The wonderful work of Guiding Eyes for the Blind is possible because of your donations.
